I gave up smoking ages ago by just taking a firm and resolute decision to give up the habit. Since then I've not looked back.

It's definitely a good thing to give up tobacco, but I don't know, personal choice and all that. I still think smoking areas (properly designed) should be available in-house. There's still something that irks me about being told I cannot do something which may harm myself whilst governments allow the buggering up of our planet for the sake of keeping businesses happy.

Dear Chassy yes and sending soldiers to Iraq on false pretences then supplying them with all the cigarettes they want duty free !!!!!!!!!! We need a common sense party. I agree about an in house ventilated area for people who cannot give up. davidj

The following note appeared in a flyer from a nearby Casino:
"Le 1er janvier 2008 votre Casino devient NON FUMEUR.
Fumeurs, bienvenue dans des espaces rιservιs."
(The 1st January 2008 your Casino will become non-smoking.
Smokers, welcome in some reserved places.)
A bit of a contradiction!
Keep on trying to give up though for your health's sake. -

I stopped in June, and, so far, I've managed not to take it up again and not to put on more than a pound or two in weight...it is hard to do but not impossible, and I didn't want to do it...my cough forced me into it and that gone completely now, and the feeling of being driven into a corner by disapproving people in public places...I think this world is going health mad but not from a good perspective but from a media driven frenzy kind of way...if things break down any more in our society, smoking will come back again because people will need to calm their nerves as do the soldiers in a war zone...you're right, it's damned hypocritical to stop people at home smoking and give soldiers duty free cigs while they fight our wars....insane world...a woman of a hundred has just celebrated her birthday and has smoked for the last 90 years of it and still does HLOL...

Alice in Wonderland has nothing on politics here. The latest shock is Tony Bliar talking about religious faith- can you believe that ? david

Everywhere I fear at the moment...and Blair's been talking about religious faith for years...he's probably going to become a Roman Catholic soon, which gives you some idea how right wing he is now...I fear anybody who believes they're doing God's work, and he does...it became clear to me quite early on, he was man who was led rather than a natural leader, a religious zeal might have been used to cover his own inadequacies...Cherie Blair is probably much more intelligent than he is, but she's got sucked into his shallow life style and friends of hers appear to be just using her to boost their own ambitions, which makes her not very street wise either...

I, too, am a smoker, and I refuse to be told to give it up. Yes I know it's a filthy habit but it's something I do by choice, legally.
I have always been a responsible smoker. If I ws in a pub and someone on the next table was having a meal I would not light up.
Now, however, us smokers are having even worse problems - non-smokers in the smoking areas outside pubs and bars complaining about us smoking in the only place that we can do it legally.
The last time someone complained to me about my smoking near them I just casually asked them what they expected sitting where they were. They complained even more and an argument flared up in which I uncharacteristically told the bastards to
off.-

Dear NotBob I remember not that long ago when there were no smoking signs on aircraft that went out as soon as the plane lifted off and a brandy and cigarette were almost universally appreciated especially by poor flyers. Davidj
PS Even the one smoking railway carriage on a train with 15 has been removed; they say ay election time that politicians are servants of the people. David.

Most smokers - and come to think of it, most non-smokers, are completely unaware of one of the most deadly legacies of smoking - C.O.P.D. - that's Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. This is where the alveoli - the small sacs at the very bottom of the lungs - that store the air that keeps you alive, are replaced by blobs of tar that literally eat the flesh. Once 35% of your lungs has been replaced with solidified tar, you die. This is completely irreversible, and if you have more than 10% tar replacement, you will find that you cannot walk more than 10 yards without getting completely out of breath. I have 17% replacement and I am frequently subject to massive asthma attacks where I cannot breathe and spend two or three hours hanging on desparately to the back of a chair or something, shuddering to get air into my half-destroyed lungs. Two years ago, I had the worst attack of my life, one that put me in hospital for two days; one so bad that I actually soiled myself because I couldn't contro, my bodily functions any more. I literally almost died. If my ex-wife hadn't turned up in the middle of it all and called an ambulance, I would have died. So, if you want to experience this wonderful condition, carry on smoking. You'll get there, I promise. OR GIVE UP BEFORE YOU GET THERE! Remember those who have never been exposed to smoke NEVER get this disease! Your choice though, of course.
